VMAs 2023: De highlights
The wait is over want de grootste muzikale avond van het jaar was vannacht dan eindelijk aangebroken; de Video Music Awards 2023. Internationaal bekende artiesten zoals Diddy, Shakira, Lil Wayne, en Doja Cat waren vannacht te zien op het podium in Newark, New Jersey in de VS. Naast deze geweldige optredens werden de typische 'Moon Person' awards uitgerijkt om de artiesten te eren. Taylor Swift was de koploper met de meeste nominaties van de avond, gevolgd door onder andere Doja Cat, SZA, en Miley Cyrus. Dit jaar is het record verbroken met meeste first-time nominees met artiesten zoals Ice Spice, GloRilla en Metro Boomin. Wat betreft de 'honorees' van dit jaar; Diddy heeft de Global Icon Award in ontvangst mogen nemen en Shakira mag zichzelf de eerste Latin American 'honoree' met een Video Vanguard Award noemen. Rode loper
De VMAs hebben een reputatie met memorabele mode momenten, en dit jaar is geen uitzondering! Shakira serveerde looks in een gouden jurk van Versace. Selena Gomez mag op de lijst van 'best dressed' met een prachtige rode jurk van Oscar de la Renta. En de host van de avond, Nicki Minaj, arriveerde in een doorschijnende roze jurk van Dolce & Gabbana. Doja Cat ging nog een stapje verder en verscheen in een opvallende spinnenweb jurk. Winnaars
De prijs van 'Video of the Year' ging dit jaar naar Taylor Swift met het nummer "Anti-Hero". Met ditzelfde nummer won ze ook 'Song of the Year', en 'Best Pop'. Maar daar bleef het niet bij, want Swift won ook de 'Artist of the Year' award, waarin dit jaar voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van de VMAs uitsluitend vrouwen genomineerd waren. De Queen of HipHop, Nicki Minaj, won 'Best Hip-Hop' met haar nummer "Super Freaky Girl". De award voor 'Best New Artist' van het jaar is gegaan naar Ice Spice. Optredens
Lil Wayne opende de show met een onvergetelijk optreden van onder andere zijn nieuwe single "Kat Food". Shakira bracht een aantal van haar hits zoals "Hips Don't Lie" en "Whenever, Wherever" naar het podium waarbij het publiek niet kon stilzitten. Olivia Rodrigo was ook te zien op het podium voor een optreden van haar nieuwe single "Vampire". Cardi B en Megan Thee Stallion gaven ons een primeur van hun nieuwe nummer "BONGOS" terwijl ze straalden in hun matching blauwe outfits. Ter ere van het 50e jubileum van Hip Hop kwamen pioniers zoals Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels, Doug E. Fresh, en Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, samen met LL Cool J, Lil Wayne, en Nicki Minaj om de show groots af te sluiten.
